Mountain biking is a great way to have fun and get some exercise at the same time. There’s nothing quite like flying down a hill on two wheels, with the wind in your hair. But it can be tricky to learn how to bunny hop on a mountain bike.
Here are a few tips to help you out.
Find a hill that is not too steep
Find a hill that is not too steep – bunny hopping requires a good deal of energy, so you will want to do it on the slightest hill you can find.
Turn so your rear wheel is parallel with the slope of the hill. This gives you more traction when launching off and makes it easier to land where you want to land.
When you’re ready to take off, crouch down and lean back a little bit. Keep your weight closest to the rear wheel of your bike. Try pushing with one foot and pulling with the other in opposite directions when you leave the ground. This makes it easier for your wheels to pop up and over any obstacles in front of you.
Bunny Hop Landing
On landing, try to let your front wheel hit the ground before touching down with your rear tire. If you land both tires simultaneously, it’s more likely that they will get caught and stop suddenly.
Practice until you feel comfortable with it – there isn’t a perfect bunny hop technique that works for everyone. Some people find that pushing with both feet works best, while others swear by staying seated and only using their right foot to get the rear tire off the ground.
Experiment with different techniques until you find one that works well, then practice it on every ride until you have mastered it.

Why bunny hop lands feel hard sometimes
The bunny hop is more complicated than it looks because the more you lean back while you are in the air, the harder it is to make both tires go forward when landing. That’s why people often lean forward too much when they first try it.
Don’t panic if your rear tire doesn’t lift appropriately on either of your first two bunny hops. Just turn around and try again, so you approach the hill differently.
