Diamondback Overdrive 29er Hardtail Review

As we mentioned many times before Diamondback is one of our favorite American bike manufacturers. Normally they make very rigid, high-quality and the same time affordable road bikes and mountain bikes. They rarely make any compromises with the quality of the components and that’s why we like their products so much.

The Overdrive reviewed here is the typical Diamondback mountain bike. They go very often with a hardtail frame which is a very good decision. The hardtail frame used here is one of the best I have ever seen. It is made of 6061-T6 aluminum and it is lightweight, durable and very very reliable.

Actually, the strength of the frame is its shape. By adding angled structure to the tubes and taking out some material where it’s not needed the manufacturer achieved this lighter, stronger and more responsive ride.

The front suspension fork is SR Suntour which is good enough for almost anything you throw on it. It will provide enough comfort and will give you additional control. SR Suntour is one of the cheapest suspension forks available but the quality is good enough for an entry-level mountain bike. You can always upgrade the suspension fork if you are not happy with the performance.

Diamondback Overdrive 29er Hardtail is equipped with Shimano 3 x 8 drivetrain and the Acera series rear derailleur. I have to say that they perform very well in every situation and you won’t have any issues at all. Gear changing is smooth and fast and overall you will be very happy with the Shimano components used here.

One of the best things about this mountain bike is that it is equipped with disc brakes. Actually, there are many cheap bikes with disc brakes but most of them are garbage and the brakes are not reliable at all. In this case, I have to admit that Diamondback delivered very good components once again.

The disc brakes are Tektro mechanical disc brakes and they offer very adequately stopping power in any conditions. You won’t have any issues with these brakes as they are simple but rigid.

And now we come to one of my favorite things about this mountain bike – the 29-inch wheels. If you have never ridden a 29-inch wheels bike you should definitely try. The bikes equipped with such wheels are super fast and enjoyable. The bike uses double-walled, reinforced rim which gives extra strength. This is very good if you are a heavy rider who is looking for a good mountain bike for exercise to lose weight. With these super heavy duty wheels, you won’t have any issues at all.

Conclusion:

Diamondback Overdrive 29er Hardtail is one of the best mountain bikes in its class. It is my top recommendation for beginners and for people who just want to ride in the mountain without spending too much. For what you pay here you will get very durable and capable mountain bike which will serve you well for many many years.

Of course, there are some minor downsides too. Some users complain that the seat is not very comfortable but this is not an issue in my opinion. You can buy a very good mountain bike seat and upgrade for less than $20.

The bike has some of the best Amazon reviews and also a very high overall score. If you don’t trust me you should trust at least the hundreds of riders who bought the Overdrive and wrote their reviews online.
